Englewood Chamber’s Smoked Mullet Award Winners
Last Friday, the Englewood Chamber honored those who have had a significant impact on our community at the Secret Society of Smoked Mullet Luncheon. Another sold-out event comprised of Englewood’s who’s who gathered at Rotonda Golf & Country Club Hills Restaurant to celebrate. The Smoked Mullet Award is given to an individual who helped create the Englewood we have today and who have never been recognized with an award for their hard work and dedication. The Legends Award honors historic families of the area who contributed to the settlement and growth of the area. The winner of the 2024 Smoked Mullet Award is Leo Pfliger with Pfliger Construction. The winner of the 2024 Legends Award is the Wiley Hicks Family.

Thank you to Eric Fogo for being our Masters of Ceremonies and Carroll Swayze for being the speaker.

The Secret Society of Smoked Mullets was started in 1996 by then Chamber President Nita (Edmondson) Cole. “The intention is to honor people from the past who helped create the Englewood we have today-people who probably never have been recognized with an award for their hard work and dedication,” explains Nita Cole. Past Smoke Mullet Award winners include: Dr. John Flower, Mac Horton, Leah Lasbury, Pat Fitzgerald, Ferold Davis, Don Platt, Eunice Albritton, Tom Dignam, Billy Davis, David Dignam, Joe Czerwinski, Denny Girard, Bill Stiver, Sr., Larry Nicol, Charlie Hicks, Diana Harris, Esther Horton, Fred Beck, Rex Rowley, Gary Schroeder, Mel Kugler, Nancy Wille and Eric Fogo and Carolyn Pope.

The Englewood Legends Award was created in 2017 to honor the historic families of the area who contributed to the settlement and growth of the area. Past winners include John Bass, Jr. and the Bass Family, Jack Tate and The Tate Family, The Goff Family, The L.A. Ainger Family, The Pope Family, The Scott family and the Wiley Hicks Family.

Chamber Scholarships
Every year, the Chamber uses funds from Manasota Mystique to provide scholarships to Lemon Bay High School Seniors. This year we gave four scholarships to those who demonstrate a robust work ethic, while working at our local businesses, and have shown overwhelming community involvement. Usually, students with the highest grades and test scores get many scholarships. We try to look for students that may have fallen through the cracks. We look less at GPA and test scores and more at work experience, community services, chamber involvement, if they plan to stay local as well as many other factors.

I have nothing less than gratitude and respect for the Englewood chamber of Commerce staff and members. They welcomed us with open arms when we moved here and opened our small business. We have since then expanded our business to business communications, vendors, clientele, community involvement and friendships. Who does that? The Englewood Chamber of Commerce does that! Thank you.
