The Coming Storm: Power, Conflict, and Warnings from History with Arne Westad
Historian Odd Arne Westad, a leading scholar of modern international and global history, explores the forces shaping today’s geopolitical tensions in his latest book, The Coming Storm: Power, Conflict, and Warnings from History. Originally from Ålesund, Norway, Westad studied history, philosophy, and languages in Oslo before earning a graduate degree in international history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of sixteen books on Asian and global history, including the influential works The Global Cold War, Restless Empire, and The Cold War: A World History.
In The Coming Storm, Westad examines striking parallels between today’s world and the decades leading up to World War I- an era marked by rising nationalism, fragile global trade, and competition among powerful nations. Drawing on deep historical insight, he analyzes modern risks involving technology, nuclear power, and shifting global alliances, urging leaders and citizens alike to learn from the past to prevent future conflict.
