Florida Native Plant Society Field Trip

FNPS Mangrove Chapter January 28, 2017 Field Trip 9 a.m.

The Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society invites the public to join in a nature walk through Jelks Preserve at 3200 N. River Road in Venice, Florida. Trail Guide Nancy Edmondson will meet walkers at the entrance at 9 a.m.
Jelks Preserve is a 614 acre natural preserve with 8 miles of trail along the Myakka River in Venice, Florida. Views of the Myakka River are the preserve’s strong point and the variety of habitats makes this hike especially interesting.  The preserve has more than eight-miles of trails, including the 3.3-mile outer loop trail.
Located at 3200 North River Road, the habitat is riverine floodplain and includes live oak with epiphytes as well as Carolina jessamine and coralbean wildflowers. Wildlife include gopher tortoises, swallowtail butterflies, swallow-tailed kites, and song birds.
DIRECTIONS: From I-75 exit 191, drive south on River Rd. The trailhead is on the left, 1.5 miles from I-75. If you are driving north from US 41 along River Road, the trailhead is on your right, 0.9 mile north of Center Rd.
